What are Predisposing Factors to Golf Injuries?

The human body has a tremendous capacity to adapt to the environment.

Exercise and activity is beneficial for our bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments, making them stronger and more functional through the breakdown and buildup of tissue.

There is a fine balance between the two, and if the breakdown occurs more rapidly than the buildup of tissue, an overuse injury occurs. These are the most common type of golf injuries.

There are three distinct challenges to the clinician in treating repetitive golf injuries. These are:

     1. Diagnosis

     2. Treatment

     3. An understanding of why the injury occurred

Causes of golf injuries are usually divided into two categories:

     1. Extrinsic factors

     2. Intrinsic factors

Possible risk factors in the development of golf injuries are shown below:

Extrinsic Factors

Intrinsic Factors

Training errors

Excessive volume, intensity, fatigue

Body malalignment

Feet – pronated feet, flat feet, high arches.

Knees – knock-knees, bow legs

Hips – rotated pelvis or pelvic tilt

Surfaces

Hard

Soft

Uneven

Leg length discrepancy

Footwear

Inappropriate

Worn out

Muscle imbalance

Equipment

Ill-fitting

Muscle weakness

Environmental conditions

Hot

Cold

Humid

Lack of flexibility

Generalized muscle tightness

Areas of muscle thickening

Restricted joint range of motion

Psychological factors

Gender, size, body composition

Inadequate nutrition

Other:

Genetic factors, endocrine factors, metabolic conditions

Most of these risk factors can be minimised. Seek the advice of a TPI Certified Golf Medical Expert to prevent chronic or recurrent problems.
